Bloemendal Wine Estate

Location

Durbanville

Overview

Bloemendal Wine Estate is situated in the fertile Durbanville Wine Valley approximately 30 minutes from Cape Town. It was established in 1702 to provide fresh produce to Cape Town and the Dutch East Indian Company ships travelling on the spice route to and from India.

The farm is 239 hectares in size which includes Kanonberg (Canon Mountain) from where a canon signalled to Cape Town that fresh produce were ready to collect. This hilltop has amazing views of Table, False Bay and most importantly Table Mountain. The first wine cellar was built in 1920 by Jannie van der Westhuizen and Bloemendal was registered as an Estate in 1987. Vineyard plantings on the estate are mainly French cultivars with the focus on Sauvignon Blanc. An iconic wine was created by Bloemendal in the Suider-Terras Sauvignon Blanc (Southern Slope) gaining world-wide recognition for its superior quality since the first bottling in 1987. Many winemakers have commented that this site is one of the best for Sauvignon Blanc in South Africa.

Although the farm can produce over 1000 tons of grapes we work with selected vineyards and only use around 10% of the production for Bloemendal Wines. Wines are made in our small boutique cellar using old and new world methods to produce wines that reflect our terroir.
