Wine Route Dining at Blaauwklippen Vineyards

Blaauwklippen was founded in 1682 by Gerrit Jansz Visser, but it wasn’t until 1688 that the first vineyards were planted in the fertile soil of the estate. Jump forward to 1899, when famed businessman and politician Cecil John Rhodes became the owner of Blaauwklippen, but only for one day! In 1971 the renowned Stellenbosch Wine Route was founded, with Blaauwklippen as one of the first members.

Our next dinner evening in Stellenbosch takes place on Thursday 27 July and you will be able to experience their beautiful wines, a new release as well as some of their gin.

Bein

Bein Wine's vineyard is ideally suited for growing Merlot. It is situated on the cooler southern slopes of Stellenbosch's Polkadraai Hills, and is blessed with deep and highly weathered granite soils. The climate is Mediterranean with dry, sunny summers and sufficient rainfall in winter. And the proximity to the coast, with its beautiful panoramic view over False Bay, ensures refreshing breezes and sufficient air humidity. This is particularly important during the warm South African summer for a slow and even ripening of the fruit.

Clovelly

The beautiful historical town of Stellenbosch lies at the centre of South Africa's premier wine-producing area and boasts a winemaking tradition that goes back to the beginning of the 17th century. The town of Stellenbosch has two training facilities for winemakers and this is where many of the country's most successful winemakers has studied. Conditions are particularly well suited to many of the noble vine varieties. The Hutton and Clovelly soils of the valley floors give way to more granite soils on the mountain slopes; average annual rainfall varies from 600-800 mm.

Meinert

We rely on Devon Crest Vineyards as the source for our red wines. The property lies on the slopes of Devon Valley’s northern ridge and rises from 200m to 310m above sea level. The whole site has a southerly aspect and grand views of False Bay, which is approximately 30km away, and the mountains surrounding Stellenbosch. The soils are chiefly deep decomposed granite and have a red-brown or terra cotta colour. They contain a high percentage of clay (about 30%) which is well dispersed throughout the profile and aids with water retention.
