The Stonewall cellar is situated on a picturesque farm near Somerset West, dating back over two centuries. The farm was bought in 1873 by the De Waal family who promptly changed the name from Verdruk Mij Niet (Don’t oppress me) to a more upbeat Happy Vale. The actual Cape Dutch Homestead however dates back to 1853. The farm then became the property of De Waal Koch, grandson of owner Koos De Waal’s brother, in 1984.
"There's history behind the Vine"
Dad Wally had been raised on the next-door spread below Helderberg & after marrying the girl-next-door, he bought Die Fonteine (Fountains) farm, being well aware of the quality of the property’s grape-friendly soils and favoured situation just a cool breeze from the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1995, having supplied grapes and wine for sale under other labels, the family decided to hoist their own flag, Somerbosch (an allusion to the farm’s situation exactly midway between Stellenbosch and Somerset West).
We're situated in the world renowned wine producing region of Stellenbosch, South Africa. A region that consistently produces some of the finest new-world wines
Our vineyards are located at the end of the Schapenberg (Afrikaans for sheep mountain) Wine Route, at an altitude of 250m. Nestled between the Hottentots-Holland Mountains and False Bay this area is known as the coolest in the Stellenbosch wine growing region.
Often, the first observation made about our wines is about the colour. Our reds are perhaps among the darkest, deepest coloured wines to be found. This is a result of a combination of the terroir and the vinification process.
Le Riche Wines is situated on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain, in close proximity to the historic town of Stellenbosch. The winery was designed to replicate our previous winery in Jonkershoek, which was built in 1911. With old style open top concrete fermentation tanks mixed with a modern minimum intervention wine making approach, the winery provides a platform to create ultra premium red wines in a classic South African style. Production is 8000×6 cases a year, with the Reserve range consisting of only about 1000 cases. The wines are rare, but worth sourcing.
Among the long rolling south-facing slopes of the Stellenbosch winelands, caressed by cool coastal breezes, lies the boutique winery and vineyard, Journey’s End. With only a handful of premium, hand-crafted wines produced here, the focus is very much on quality.
Tastings are by appointment only. Please contact the farm to arrange a time.
Here's an excerpt from the 2017 Platter South African Wine Guide: "The location of André Parker's vineyards on viticulturally vaunted Schapenberg Hill overlooking False Bay promises much for this collaboration with ex-Waterkloof winemaker Werner Engelbrecht, familiar with the terroir, and wine entrepreneur Jabulani Ntshangase, whose New York residency provides access to the US market."
