Overview

Established in 2001 by Johan Holtzhausen, Mount Babylon is a family-owned wine business situated amid unique fynbos and bird life in the foothills of the Babylon’s Toring Mountain Range that overlooks the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Mount Babylon falls under the appellation Hemel-en-Aarde Rigde in the Walker Bay district.

Having planted its first virus-free vines in 2001, Mount Babylon was the first wine farm in the cool Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge Ward to venture into grape-growing. The pioneering estate as well as the first in this wine Ward to deliver 4-star Platter for a red blend for the Hemel-en-Aarde Area, namely its maiden vintage, SMV. This is Mount Babylon’s flagship wine, a unique blend for South Africa consisting of Shiraz, Malbec and Viogner. It was also the first wine farm in the Hemel-en-Aarde Area in 2007 to produce a Cap Classique from Shiraz grapes. In 2012 Mount Babylon decided to focus mainly on Cap Classique production and also partnered with Creation Wines to produce a second bubbly namely, Elation, made from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
