Meerendal Wine Estate

Location

Durbanville

Overview

For this 300-year old wine estate, history was made in 1714 when Christina Stans, widow of the first owner, planted 60,000 vines on the rolling hills of Meerendal. Following in her footsteps, Liza Goodwin, cellarmaster and winemaker since 1998, kept this tradition alive. Privately owned since 2004, Meerendal Wine Estate has been developing into one of South Africa’s top wine estates. Since 2012, “Team Meerendal” has represented the wine estate at the world’s biggest and toughest mountain bike race, the Absa Cape Epic. Meerendal is also dedicated to giving back to the community through the involvement in charities such as Songo, Food Cycle and the Bigfeet Elephant Foundation.

The Crown Restaurant is stylish, trendy and beautifully decorated and has spectacular views overlooking the Boland mountains and local vineyards. The restaurant is truly a countryside haven just minutes away from the buzz of the cosmopolitan city life of Cape Town. It is renowned for attention to detail, impeccable service, fine quality and value for money and is fast becoming a local favourite. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Carlucci’s Deli and Coffee Shop has picture-perfect views of the Boland mountains and is without a doubt the perfect location to sit back, relax and enjoy a bite to eat. The Deli has a healthy delicatessen style menu, that focuses on freshly made sandwiches, salads, and breakfasts and a very popular pizza offering. The deli offers ready-made meals and salads, making it convenient for guests that are looking to grab a quick takeaway. Picnics are also available.

The gracious Cape Dutch homestead originally built as the family home has been converted into a boutique hotel keeping all the grandeur and elegance and combining it with timeless style and ultimate luxury. Recent additions to the exclusive hotel inventory include six newly built rooms in The Cottage (adjacent to the Manor House), all of which are in the traditional Cape Dutch style with neatly designed verandas and gardens.

Meerendal has been the venue for a number of Absa Cape Epic Prologues and finishes and has a magnificent mountain bike trail on the estate.

Meerendal Art Gallery, a Feast of Culture, opened on in December 2016 in the Chapel on the Wine Estate. Meerendal is spreading its vines to include creative arts in the offering on the estate - sip on premium wine as you soak in swirls of texture and colour, or speak to the resident artists while on a studio visit. Invest in art pieces that enhance your Meerendal wine experience in the tasting room, or attend inspiring and upbeat art classes while enjoying the Estate’s beautiful surroundings. Open from 09:00 till 17:00 weekdays
