Die Bergkelder

Overview

Welcome to the characterful Die Bergkelder Wine Centre in Stellenbosch is the proud Home of Fleur Du Cap wines, offering wine lovers one of the most rewarding wine experiences in the Cape.

You will get the chance to taste an inspiring range of award-winning Fleur de Cap wines, all in the charming setting of our famous “Cellar in the Mountain”. Die Bergkelder is tucked under the steep slopes of the historic Papegaaiberg. The name refers to clay pigeons (‘papegaai’ in Dutch), which were shot in commemoration of the birthday of Governor Simon van der Stel, in the late 1700s. (View our Wine Museum)

A footpath takes you along the banks of the Plankenburg River, where in harvesting season you could see the tipping of red wine grapes. Crossing a footbridge flanked by lush gardens you will reach the “Cellar in the Mountain”. Here a fascinating short audio-visual presentation on the story behind Die Bergkelder and Fleur du Cap can be viewed. (View our galleries)

This unique underground bottle-maturation cellar is the first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Thousands of bottles of wine are laid down in this tranquil setting, guarded serenely by old French oak maturation casks. These casks bear carvings of various famous Cape wine landmarks and events
