We recently visited Almenkerk Wine Estate on a Saturday morning, partly because it is one of the beautiful wine estates in the Elgin Valley, and partly because Almenkerk is one of the generous sponsors of our current Wineries.co.za competition.
As part of the competition, Almenkerk is sponsoring 6 bottles of Almenkerk Lace Rouge. With their wine included in the prize pool, we visited the estate to experience the tasting room, try their platter, and spend some time taking in the Elgin Valley views.
Almenkerk has always been known for its setting, and it still has some of the nicest views in the area. From the tasting room, you get a wide view over a big part of the Elgin Valley, with vineyards, open space, and that calm country atmosphere that makes the region such a good weekend destination.
We visited on a Saturday morning, and the estate was surprisingly busy. It was not unpleasantly busy, though. The atmosphere was relaxed, with people enjoying tastings, chatting, and even playing chess while spending time at the tasting room.
It was a cold morning, so the gas heater inside was a welcome touch. There is plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors, although on the day we visited, the outside seating was a little chilly. In warmer weather, the outdoor seating would be a great place to sit with a glass of wine and enjoy the view.
We ordered the Almenkerk platter, which was priced at R395. It is intended to serve two people, and it works very well as a generous platter for two. That said, it could also easily be shared as a lighter snack between four people, especially if you are mainly there for a wine tasting and just want something to nibble on.
The platter included a variety of meats and cheeses, along with grapes, figs, olives, jam, mustard, and cracker-style bread. It was a good wine farm platter: simple, generous, easy to share, and well suited to a relaxed tasting experience.
At R395, it offers good value, especially considering the portion size and the setting. If you are planning a slow Saturday outing in Elgin, this is a good option if you want something more substantial than a few tasting pours, but not necessarily a full lunch.
One of the things that stood out during our visit was that the tastings at Almenkerk are still very affordable.
We tasted a range of white wines, including the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, while my wife tasted the Merlot and a few of the whites as well. We did not write down every wine on the day, but the overall experience was enjoyable and relaxed. Hopefully when the Wineries App is back, we'll be able to take more detailed notes.
For visitors exploring the Elgin wine route, the tasting prices make Almenkerk an easy estate to add to your itinerary. You can enjoy a proper tasting, share a platter, and spend some time at the estate without the outing becoming expensive.
The service also made a good impression. The tasting room manager was a delight: friendly, welcoming, and clearly someone who enjoys his job.
Even though the tasting room was busy, we did not wait long. Service was prompt, and the whole visit felt well managed. That makes a difference, especially on a Saturday when wine farms can easily become rushed or impersonal.
Almenkerk is the kind of estate where you can settle in for a while. It does not feel like a quick tasting counter stop. Between the views, the seating, the platter, and the relaxed atmosphere, it works well as a proper weekend outing.
One detail I personally enjoyed was seeing dogs on the property. It adds to the relaxed farm feeling and makes the estate feel lived-in and welcoming.
On the morning we visited, the combination of people playing chess, the warm indoor seating, the friendly service, and the valley views gave Almenkerk a very comfortable Saturday morning feel.
A major reason for our visit was Almenkerk’s involvement in our Wineries.co.za competition. The estate is sponsoring 6 bottles of Almenkerk Lace Rouge, and we wanted to highlight both the wine and the estate behind it.
We always appreciate wineries that support our competitions. It gives wine lovers a chance to discover new estates, revisit familiar ones, and experience wines they may not have tried before.
The Almenkerk Lace Rouge is part of the Lace range, and it is one of the wines included in the prize pool. If you are entering the competition, this is one of the bottles to look out for.
Visiting Almenkerk Wine Estate in person also gives you a better sense of where the wine comes from. The views, the tasting room, the service, and the relaxed Elgin setting all form part of the experience.
Almenkerk is also a good estate to include as part of a broader Elgin wine route outing. The area has several excellent wineries nearby, so you can easily build a Saturday or weekend trip around a few different stops.
For us, Almenkerk worked well as a morning visit: a scenic tasting room, affordable tastings, a generous platter, friendly service, and some of the best views in the valley.
If you are planning a trip to Elgin, Almenkerk Wine Estate is well worth adding to your list. It is especially appealing if you want a relaxed tasting experience, good value, beautiful views, and a wine farm where you can take your time rather than rush through a tasting.
Our visit to Almenkerk was a reminder of why the Elgin Valley is such a rewarding wine region to explore. The estate offers a strong combination of scenery, value, hospitality, and relaxed weekend atmosphere.
It was also good to visit one of our competition sponsors in person. Almenkerk’s contribution of 6 bottles of Almenkerk Lace Rouge adds something special to the competition, and the estate itself is absolutely worth visiting if you are in the area.
Whether you are entering the competition, planning an Elgin wine route trip, or simply looking for a scenic Saturday outing, Almenkerk is a destination worth keeping in mind.
