At Wineries.co.za, we love discovering South African wine brands with a story behind them and Nuiba Wines is one that deserves a place on your wine radar. From its meaningful name to its carefully crafted wines, Nuiba brings together a love for the land, winemaking experience and a refreshing focus on letting the grapes speak for themselves.
The story begins with winemaker Suzanne Coetzee, whose childhood on a farm in Namibia inspired the name Nuiba. More than simply a brand name, Nuiba represents a connection to family, nature, memories and a simpler way of life. That sense of place continues to influence the wines produced today.
A Different Approach to Winemaking
With more than 15 years of experience in the wine industry, including time working internationally, Suzanne has developed a winemaking philosophy centred around minimal intervention and authentic expression.
Rather than allowing the winemaking process to overpower the fruit, the focus is on preserving the natural characteristics of the grapes and allowing each wine to develop its own personality.
Several of the grapes used in the Nuiba range come from the Piekenierskloof, an area particularly well known for its dryland bush vines. These challenging growing conditions can result in naturally concentrated fruit with plenty of character qualities that are beautifully suited to Nuiba's style of winemaking.
In the cellar, traditional techniques such as open fermentation, regular punch-downs and ageing in older French oak barrels are used to build texture and complexity while keeping the fruit at the heart of each wine.
Meet the Nuiba Wines
Nuiba currently offers a diverse collection of wines, with each “Post” bringing something different to the table.
Nuiba First Post
The First Post is a Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blend from Stellenbosch.
The Semillon is barrel fermented and aged on the lees before being blended with unwooded Sauvignon Blanc. This combination creates a wine that balances freshness with texture, offering flavours of white peach, lime, melon, mango, green apple and citrus.
It is an easy-drinking yet interesting white that pairs beautifully with seafood, fish, salads and lighter chicken dishes.
Nuiba Second Post Shiraz
Red wine lovers will want to take note of the Second Post Shiraz.
The 2022 vintage is made from 100% Shiraz, sourced from dryland vineyards situated on the slopes of the Olifantsrivier Mountain. With its Rhône-like climate, the area provides excellent conditions for producing expressive Shiraz.
The grapes are basket pressed, with alcoholic and malolactic fermentation taking place in barrel. The wine then spends 18 months in third-fill French oak barrels.
The result is a Shiraz showing ripe, generous fruit supported by gentle oak, smooth tannins and a refined finish. It is a wine with enough structure to complement food while remaining enjoyable on its own.
Nuiba recommends pairing the Second Post Shiraz with Thai curry, a juicy steak or berry compote.
And for Wineries.co.za readers, there is an extra reason to get excited: Nuiba Wines is generously sponsoring six bottles of Second Post Shiraz for our Wineries.co.za Wine Competition.
Nuiba Third Post
The Third Post is a Cape red blend combining Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.
The Pinotage includes fruit from 35-year-old bush vines, adding depth and character to the blend. Cabernet Sauvignon contributes structure, while Grenache brings elegance and finesse.
The result is a rich and expressive red that is particularly well suited to hearty dishes such as oxtail and lamb shank.
Nuiba Fourth Post
The Fourth Post offers something a little different.
This distinctive blend combines Semillon and Malbec to create an elegant rosé-style wine with freshness, texture and complexity.
It is a wonderfully versatile choice for relaxed summer occasions and works well with dishes ranging from sushi and ceviche to seafood, pasta and pizza.
Nuiba Fifth Post
The range is completed by the Fifth Post, a 100% Chenin Blanc made from old Piekenierskloof vines.
The vines produce grapes with concentrated flavour while retaining natural acidity. Barrel fermentation and time on fine lees add richness and texture, with tropical fruit complemented by subtle vanilla and almond notes.
It is a beautifully balanced expression of Chenin Blanc and a great example of the character that can come from old vines.
A Wine Brand With a Story to Tell
What stands out to us about Nuiba Wines is the connection between the person, the place and the wine.
There is a sense of history behind the name, a respect for the vineyards and a clear intention in the cellar. Rather than trying to make wines that conform to a particular formula, Nuiba allows the grapes, vineyards and vintage to play their part.
For wine lovers, this makes discovering the range all the more interesting. Every bottle offers an opportunity to experience a different expression of South African vineyards while getting to know the story behind the Nuiba name.
