Arendsig: A Family Farm With a Spirit of Its Own

Some places just have a feeling about them.

You arrive, look out across the vineyards, see the mountains in the distance and the Breede River nearby and suddenly understand why someone would choose to build their life around this landscape.

That is Arendsig.

Situated between Robertson and Bonnievale in the beautiful Breede River Valley, Arendsig is a family-owned farm where generations of farming heritage meet curiosity, creativity and a love for the land.

And at the centre of it all is winemaker Lourens van der Westhuizen, whose journey took him from growing up on the family farm to learning about wine in some of the world's most famous wine regions, before bringing all those experiences home.

It all started at home

Lourens is a fifth-generation farmer, so farming was never just a career choice. It was part of growing up.

But his curiosity took him far beyond the family farm.

After studying Agriculture and gaining experience in South Africa, Lourens travelled to California and Burgundy, experiencing different vineyards, winemaking techniques and wine cultures along the way.

Then he came home.

And sometimes, coming home is where the real adventure begins.

In 2004, Lourens was given the opportunity to select small parcels of the family's Shiraz and Chardonnay vineyards. He was also given a section of the farm that had never been planted.

There was just one catch.

It was rocky. Very rocky.

Instead of giving up on the challenging piece of land, Lourens decided to see what it could become.

Four months of preparation later, the first steps towards what would become Arendsig's single-vineyard philosophy were underway.

Let the vineyard do the talking

One of the things that makes Arendsig so interesting is its belief that every vineyard has a personality.

The farm's different vineyard blocks experience their own combination of soil, elevation, sunlight, wind and climate. Instead of trying to hide those differences, Arendsig embraces them.

The result is a collection of wines designed to reflect where they come from.

The range includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinotage and Grenache, along with several other varieties.

And this is where Arendsig gets particularly exciting.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all approach.

Each variety has its own place in the story.

A little piece of the Breede River Valley

The setting certainly doesn't hurt.

Arendsig lies in the southern part of the Robertson Wine Valley, surrounded by the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges.

The Breede River flows close to the farm, with the river just around 100 metres from the farm cottages.

It is the kind of landscape that makes you want to slow down.

Vineyards stretch across the valley, mountains frame the horizon and the river brings another layer of life to the scenery.

For visitors, it is an opportunity to experience the Robertson wine country from a slightly different perspective, not just passing through for a tasting, but actually spending time on the farm.

Stay a little longer

Arendsig offers four self-catering cottages, nestled among the vineyards and close to the Breede River.

Imagine waking up surrounded by vines, spending the day exploring the valley and then watching the landscape change as the afternoon light moves across the mountains.

It is easy to see why the farm has become more than simply a place where grapes are grown.

Arendsig also hosts weddings and bespoke functions, giving people the opportunity to celebrate special occasions in the middle of the very landscape that inspires the wines.

Wine tastings are available by appointment, offering visitors the chance to get closer to the farm, its wines and the philosophy behind them.

The Arendsig attitude

Perhaps the most inspiring part of the Arendsig story is that it wasn't created by taking the easiest route.

It started with a young winemaker who left home, explored the world and then returned with new ideas.

It started with a piece of rocky land that could easily have been dismissed as unsuitable.

And it grew into a family wine estate that continues to put the vineyard at the centre of everything.

That feels very South African.
