Where Precision Meets the Vine: The Story of Ernie Els Wines

There is something rather fitting about finding a world-class golfer in the heart of Stellenbosch.

Golf is a game of tiny details. The right club. The right line. The right amount of power. Get those details right and the result can be extraordinary.

At Ernie Els Wines, that same appreciation for precision has found a different home, among the vineyards of the Helderberg.

Set on Annandale Road in Stellenbosch, the estate is surrounded by sweeping mountain views, vineyards and some of the Cape Winelands' most spectacular scenery. It is a place where wine, food, hospitality and a little bit of golf come together in one very distinctive experience.

More than a famous name

The Ernie Els name may be instantly recognisable, but the estate has developed an identity of its own.

The winery opened in 2005, with Cabernet Sauvignon playing an important role from the beginning. Today, the range is divided into four collections: Signature, Major Series, Big Easy and Proprietor's. Winemaker Louis Strydom has played an important role in developing the wines and expressing the character of the Helderberg.

And the location is certainly doing its part.

The estate's Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards sit on the warm, north-facing slopes of the Helderberg at around 250 metres above sea level. With the Atlantic Ocean approximately 15 kilometres away, the maritime influence helps moderate the vineyard's conditions and can extend the ripening period. The gravel-rich soils also contribute to the wines' structure and depth.

A Cabernet with a story

Cabernet Sauvignon remains at the heart of the estate, making the 2023 Major Series Cabernet Sauvignon particularly relevant to this year's Wineries.co.za competition.

The wine comes from nine Cabernet Sauvignon clones grown on the property, with individual vineyard blocks handled separately during production.

And this is where things get interesting.

The grapes are fermented in Italian concrete tanks, while selected parcels are also fermented in terracotta amphorae. The wine is then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, with a small portion spending additional time in terracotta.

It is a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern experimentation, much like the estate itself.

Come for the view, stay for the experience

Of course, you don't have to be a wine enthusiast to appreciate the estate.

The Tasting Room is designed to feel warm and welcoming, opening onto a wide terrace with views across the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains. Visitors can choose from several tasting experiences, ranging from an approachable introduction to the Big Easy range through to more in-depth tastings showcasing the Major Series and Proprietor's wines.

For those wanting something extra special, the Signature Canapé Tasting pairs the flagship Ernie Els Signature with a seasonal canapé and a rare vintage from the estate's Vinothèque. The experience can be enjoyed inside the wine library or outside on the terrace.

There is also a Signature five-course tasting menu at the restaurant, designed as a complete culinary journey. The menu changes seasonally and brings together dishes created around the estate's wines.

And yes… there is golf

It wouldn't quite be an Ernie Els experience without a little golf.

Outside the tasting room is a chipping green, where visitors can try their hand at a golfing challenge — a playful nod to the career that made the name famous in the first place.

Inside, the connection continues in the Trophy Room, which displays many of Ernie Els' golfing achievements, including original trophies and awards.

Then there is the cellar itself.

Visitors can explore the winemaking side of the estate, where large concrete fermentation tanks, amphorae and rows of maturation barrels give a glimpse into what happens behind the scenes. The estate's Vinothèque houses older vintages alongside the current portfolio.

So a visit isn't simply about sitting down for a tasting. There are layers to explore from the vineyards and cellar to the food, golf memorabilia and mountain views.

The estate's restaurant adds another reason to linger.

Its modern farmhouse-style setting opens onto a terrace overlooking Stellenbosch and the Helderberg Mountains, while the kitchen focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

For visitors, that combination creates something that feels quintessentially Cape Winelands: beautiful scenery, good food, interesting stories and a setting designed to make you slow down for a while.
