Elgin is one of South Africa’s most distinctive wine regions. Surrounded by mountains and known for its cool climate, the valley is ideally suited to producing wines with freshness, elegance and vibrant character.
Nestled in this beautiful region is Highlands Road Estate, a boutique wine estate where a passion for the land, thoughtful winemaking and a relaxed country atmosphere come together.
From Fruit Farm to Wine Estate
The story of Highlands Road Estate began in 2004, when owner Michael White purchased a 26-hectare fruit farm in Elgin.
What started as a fruit-growing property gradually transformed into a wine estate. Vineyards were planted, a winery and barrel cellar were established, and a tasting room was created overlooking the beautiful surrounding landscape.
The estate produced its first wine in 2007, marking the beginning of its journey as a boutique wine producer.
Today, Highlands Road Estate focuses on producing quality wines that reflect the unique characteristics of the Elgin Valley.
The Magic of Elgin
One of the secrets behind Highlands Road’s wines lies in the estate’s diverse terroir.
The vineyards are planted on different soil types, including Table Mountain sandstone, Tukulu and Bokkeveld shale. Different vineyard sites also offer varying aspects and growing conditions, allowing each grape variety to develop its own character.
The estate produces a selection of varieties including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Noir and Syrah, along with carefully crafted blends and dessert wines.
Elgin’s cooler climate plays an important role in the style of these wines, helping to retain natural acidity and freshness while allowing the grapes to develop complex flavours.
The result is a range of wines that are elegant, expressive and distinctly connected to their place of origin.
Highlands Road Chardonnay 2022
For Chardonnay lovers, there is an especially good reason to get to know Highlands Road Estate.
The Highlands Road Chardonnay 2022 showcases the balance and elegance associated with cool-climate Chardonnay.
The wine combines fresh citrus and floral characteristics with a beautifully textured palate. Oak maturation adds depth and complexity while allowing the natural freshness of the wine to remain prominent.
It is a versatile Chardonnay that can be enjoyed on its own or paired with food, making it ideal for everything from a relaxed lunch to a special dinner.
A Relaxed Wine Tasting Experience
A visit to Highlands Road Estate offers much more than simply tasting wine.
The estate’s tasting room provides a welcoming setting where visitors can relax while discovering the wines. Guests can choose a comfortable spot at the tasting counter, sit at a table or settle into the couches beside the fireplace.
The views are equally impressive, with the estate’s dam and the magnificent Kogelberg mountains providing a beautiful backdrop.
Wine tastings offer an opportunity to explore the estate’s different wines while learning more about the vineyards and the winemaking philosophy behind them.
For visitors interested in seeing what happens behind the scenes, cellar tours may also be available, depending on the winemaking team’s schedule.
Where Tradition Meets Modern Winemaking
Inside the cellar, Highlands Road combines modern equipment with traditional winemaking techniques.
Stainless-steel tanks are used alongside barrels, amphorae and open fermenters, giving the winemaking team the flexibility to work with each variety according to its individual requirements.
Rather than focusing purely on volume, Highlands Road takes a boutique approach, allowing the team to give careful attention to the grapes throughout the winemaking process.
This attention to detail helps preserve the distinctive qualities of the fruit and the cool-climate character of the Elgin Valley.
A Wine Estate With a Scottish Twist
Highlands Road Estate also has a unique personality.
The estate’s identity draws inspiration from the Scottish heritage of its owner and even incorporates its own registered tartan.
The Scottish influence can sometimes be seen at wine events too, where members of the team have been known to embrace the theme by wearing kilts.
It’s a fun and unexpected touch that adds to the personality of this very South African wine estate.
