There are wine farms you visit for the wine, and then there are places where the wine, people, food and experience become part of the memory. Nestled in the Bottelary Hills of Stellenbosch, Koelenhof Wines offers a relaxed and welcoming introduction to the Cape Winelands, combining generations of winemaking heritage with memorable tasting experiences.
Just a short drive from Stellenbosch, Koelenhof is a destination where visitors can discover a diverse selection of wines, enjoy unique pairings and take in the beautiful surroundings of one of South Africa's most famous wine regions.
A Stellenbosch story dating back to 1941
Koelenhof's story began in 1941, when a group of grape growers established a cooperative with a vision for producing wine from the surrounding Stellenbosch vineyards.
Pieter Hugo De Vries became the cellar's first manager and winemaker, establishing the foundations for a wine business that would continue to develop through the generations.
The De Vries family has remained an important part of the Koelenhof story. Over the years, the cellar evolved from primarily producing bulk wine into a producer with its own distinctive bottled ranges.
The first wines bottled under the Koelenhof label appeared in 1974, marking an important chapter in the cellar's history.
Today, Koelenhof continues to combine this heritage with a modern approach to winemaking, producing wines that are approachable, versatile and designed to be enjoyed.
Discover the Koelenhof wine ranges
One of the highlights of Koelenhof is the variety of wines available, offering something for different tastes and occasions.
The Koelenhof range includes approachable, easy-drinking wines that are perfect for relaxed occasions, while the Koelenbosch range showcases a selection of popular cultivars and more distinctive wines.
The Koelenbosch range includes favourites such as Merlot, Pinotage, Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Sangiovese.
For those looking to explore the heritage of Stellenbosch through a more premium offering, the Stellenbosch 1679 range celebrates the area's long-standing wine history and unique sense of place.
Meet the Koelenbosch Sangiovese 2023
One wine worth looking out for is the Koelenbosch Sangiovese 2023.
This medium-bodied red offers a combination of fruit, spice and savoury character. Cherry and blackcurrant flavours are complemented by subtle earthy and spicy notes, while time spent in French oak contributes additional depth and structure.
It's also a wonderfully versatile food wine. Think hearty tomato-based dishes, pizza topped with salami, roasted vegetables, aged cheeses or a delicious prawn and chorizo pasta.
And there is another reason wine lovers should know this particular bottle...

Visitors can enjoy a standard wine tasting, where they can sample a selection of Koelenhof wines and discover the different styles produced at the cellar.
For something a little sweeter, the Chocolate & Wine Pairing combines selected wines with handmade Belgian chocolates. It's an indulgent way to explore how different flavours interact with wine.
Then there's the wonderfully refreshing Sorbet & Wine Pairing. Six wines are paired with sorbet and gelato, creating an experience that's particularly suited to warm Stellenbosch days.
